The shake weight is one of the funniest things that got so popular for all the wrong reasons, making it pretty successful. The shake weight started out as this really low budget commercial that would played a few times throughout the day, but soon it went viral on the internet and of course everyone started to make jokes.

I remember walking in Great Mall and seeing the shake weight being sold there and teenagers buying it. I was thinking.... "oh jeez... why do they need this..." but soon I realized it's a birthday novelty. The shake weight became such a popular birthday gift instead of a workout tool. I was actually surprised by how many people purchased it as birthday gift for others. Pretty soon when my birthday came around, I too got the shake weight. It now sits in my room collecting dust...

Anyways, the shake weight was such as "fail idea", but the through the help of silly internet users it went viral and became an internet sensation. When SNL had the shake weight sketch more and more people knew about it and started buying it for their friends.

Yeah... it became really popular. Kristen Wiig did that snid bit. 

I still think that shake weight totally became accidentally famous. They got so much revenue from the first shake weight that they made a new one just for men.
